Use your benefits

Your benefits may pay for it.

Many workplace wellness accounts cover personal fitness training. Here is how to check yours and claim your plan.

The short version. If your employer gives you a Lifestyle or Wellness Spending Account, a personal fitness training programme is often an eligible expense, so your Bodicise plan may cost you nothing out of pocket. A Health Spending Account usually won't cover it. Every employer chooses what its own account covers, so check yours first.

Which account

AccountDoes it usually cover a fitness programme?
Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA), Wellness Spending Account (WSA) or Personal Spending Account (PSA)Often, yes. Many providers' standard lists include fitness programs, personal training or fitness consultants. Your employer decides the final list.
Health Spending Account (HSA) or Health Care Spending AccountUsually no. These cover medical expenses, and the Canada Revenue Agency lists fitness and gym fees as not eligible.

How to claim

  1. Check your list. In your benefits app or booklet, look under your spending account for fitness, personal training or fitness programs. Not sure? Ask HR (there's an email below).
  2. Get your plan. Take the free assessment, then buy your 8-week plan ($29.99).
  3. Open your receipt. There's a Receipt link on your plan page and on the payment confirmation page. Print it or save it as a PDF.
  4. Submit the claim in your benefits provider's app or website, with the receipt attached.

What the receipt shows

Claims are approved on what the receipt says, so ours is written for this:

If your list doesn't mention fitness programs or personal training, ask. This opens a ready-made email you can send to HR or your benefits administrator:
